Dress Gerty in your worn clothes so your pet smells your scent.
Introduce Gerty slowly and calmly as if Gerty is a new friend you want your pet to be comfortable with. Talk to Gerty, Give Gerty a high five when you exit the room, and interact with Gerty periodically.
After 24-48 hours, take Gerty away and bring Gerty back. When your pet acts favorably to Gerty, it's time to leave your pet alone and Gerty will work her magic!
